Our Story:

Hello my name is Milton Byron  and I 'm the owner of Byron’s Hockeyland. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for coming to my website. I hope you enjoy it.

Esther and I are separated and getting a divorce, but she was a big part of the making of what Byron's Hockeyland was about in the beginning .

First, a little about us, I have always loved hockey. I have been collecting and playing hockey since I was a kid. The love for hockey continued as I grew. I was collecting cards and other memorabilia through the 70’s and early 80’s. Then I became a part time card dealer. Part time because in the late 70’s I had become a police officer. I retired in 1992 because of an injury. It was another police officer, that got me started collecting game worn jerseys. He gave me a list of jerseys being sold by a very well respected jersey dealer and I was hooked.

At that point, we started buying and selling hockey jerseys. We purchased our first group of jerseys, through another collector, from the Capitals. Then we purchased a partial set of 81-82 Flyers jerseys from a collector in Chicago. Wow, what a great feeling. All the while, my wife, Esther, was surprised at my eagerness to get involved in this hobby. Soon after that I was introduced to my first real contact. I met the Philadelphia Flyers Trainer. Well, one thing lead to another and before long we were running a thriving business. One that needed more. Esther quit her other job and started working our business on a full time basis. By then, I was buying from the Flyers directly and everything just snow balled from there. I can now say that I have dealt with almost every team in the league in one way or another over the years. With the help of my wife, Esther, we have built our business to what it is today.

I use to travel most weekends doing sports collectibles shows all over the country. But now with the EBAY  I have been able to stay home and tend to our three boys, Josh, Dalton, and Cole. Esther and I are separated and she is currently not working in our business. So its up to me to keep our home based business going.

My mother recently has passed away to join my father on the other side, who passed in 1999. I know many of you out there remember them at shows we me over the years. Mom did some of the traveling after dad passed. Recently she went to the Anaheim National in the summer of 2000. They are both missed and loved very much.

We had two very capable and reliable people, but due a lot of things I had to downsize the business is February of 2004 and let Bill and Alicia go. This was not a easy task, they where like family.

So I took over doing the business again by myself and as of February 2005 I am still chugging along. Esther and I are separated and I have the control of the kids, house and business.

Many of you know my kids, who are Cole 11, Dalton 13 and Josh 16. They are a challenge for sure as lots of you guys out there have seen. Cole is bi polar and has ADHD. Dalton has Asbergers which is a of autism. Josh is Bi polar and has Obsessive Defiant Disorder. They are all under the care of doctors and therapists. They have consolers and therapists that come to the house each week. So that means me scheduling 6 people to come in to see my kids. They each have 2 people that work with them. Between this, school, and the medication they are on, they are a full time job.

Our home office is open from 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday. Calls placed evenings and Saturday are not able to be quickly answered since the office is closed at that time.

In January of 2006 I had a very special lady named Marilyn Kleinberg enter into my life. She is a wonderful and caring women who has been trying to understand our crazy hobby. My kids love her and she gets along with Esther who I am separated from. Marilyn and I have hopes and dreams for the future that we are slowing working towards them.

Marilyn has her own business called CruiseOne  and you can find her website at www.cruiseone.com/mkleinberg She can book a Cruise for you as well as a land base vacation. Her email is mkleinberg@cruiseone.com

In April of 2006 I had a TIA ( Transient Ischemic Attack ) which use to be called mini stroke. I had trouble walking, my left leg was lagging but it's back to being normal.

I also have mild expressive aphasia which will get better with speech rehab. I have trouble reading a word and verbalizing it. I can speak in a conversation, but when asked something pointed, my response is also slow. This has clear up a lot.

I get tire often and had been experiencing a foggy type spell , which we have determined was my medication. I have since been back to the doctor and we are working on slowly getting the medications corrected. Getting 7 new pills after the hospital in April was overloading without me realizing it. Since I stopped most of the medications in November I have had only minor bouts of confusion, but the tiredness is still a problem. Some days I sleep most of the day, which is tuff on my business and kids. But the doctors say that is normal for someone that had a TIA .

I have been trying to figure out what happened too me and I have been to several doctors at the University of Penn in Philadelphia. Lots still remains a mystery which appears to be common place with a TIA, but I have found one thing I that needs attention. I have a hole in my heart that I was born with they say. They tell me 30% of the population have them and do not even know it. Unless the have a bout like I had. So, come January of 2007 I am going to be speaking to the Surgeon that is going to correct this problem.

I had the operation on March 6th to close the hole in my heart. They went through arteries in my legs with a scope to plug the hole. Right afterwards I felt much better. I am not as tired all the time that I have been. I have some recovery time and medication to take.

I'd like to thank you all for the power of prayer, it's amazing the strength I get knowing you all are out there caring about me, thanks goes out from all of us, Marilyn, the kids and I really appreciate it.

THE EXPERT:

We have had thousands of Game Worn jerseys over the years and this is THE most important part of being an expert. I have become the most recognized expert in the sports collectibles industry for authenticating GAME WORN hockey jerseys. I have been written up in many magazine and newspaper articles on collecting Hockey jerseys. I have also been on several radio and TV sports shows.

Having had the jerseys, I know what they look like and its been easy to build a reference library of pictures and notes about jerseys. I use our current inventory during the authentication process. With as many jerseys as we have, it’s easy to find things to compare a jersey against. We also have an extensive library of books, hockey cards, magazines, programs and media guides that I also use to authenticate jerseys. I use these books for both information on the playing career of a player as well as the photos in the books.

Another tool that I utilize is a video library. One good type of video is fight tape because a fight often gives you more than a minute to take a real good look at the players jersey up close and usually from several angles. Even goal scoring and face-off shots don’t provide as much time showing a close up view of the player.

It is also very important to know where to get an answer to a particular question if you don’t know yourself. For this I use our vast network of connections like Trainers, Equipment Managers and other team personnel. Also the Hall of Fame, other dealers and often even other collectors. Having a network of these connections is very important.

Many techniques are used to authenticate Game Worn hockey jerseys. I use physical evidence as well as common sense. I am able to authenticate a jersey that’s a one of a kind to the most common of common jerseys.

Part of being an expert is having the knowledge when to say, " I don’t know but I will find out". This is an area that I believe hurts other so called "experts". They are often afraid to say they don’t know and they make a poor judgment. The line " Oh, it comes from a good source", sometimes weighs to heavily in there so called experts authentication process. They are replacing knowledge, physical evidence and common sense with the GOOD SOURCE excuse. I don’t rely as heavily on where the jersey comes from. It’s important to know, but if you have a jersey that has four or five things wrong with it yet it comes from a good source, well, return it to the good source.

I have seen jerseys that in my opinion are not authentic game worn jerseys but they came from a team official, companies that actually make the jerseys for a team , or even players. I have seen many things in the 15 + years I’ve been doing this. I have seen an increasingly alarming number of fake jerseys being passed off as game used. The only way I feel that, as a expert, I can fight the influx of these fake jerseys is by making myself available to the dealers and collectors. I do authenticating for FREE, at shows. I will give you my expert opinion at no charge. If you send it to our office the fee is $20. You also have to include return shipping.

The fee for a letter of authenticity, starts at $50 and can be $100 or more depending on the length of the investigation. Of course, if the item is purchased from Byron’s, and you ask at the time of the purchase, we’ll provide you with a letter. We also offer a quality letter of authenticity suitable for framing printed on parchment paper with a raised, embossed gold seal, absolutely free of charge.

I know more today than yesterday and, hopefully, I’ll know more tomorrow than I do today. Being an expert is a constant learning experience. I pride myself in offering the highest degree of knowledge when authenticating a jersey. Weather its for someone else or for our business.

THE EBAY EXPERIENCE:

I have been selling on Ebay now since 1999 and for those of you that know me from the shows circuit of the past , know that I was king of crap, meaning I had all kinds of sports collectables and things at my booth. I sell all types of Hockey Collectables on there as well as baseball, football, basketball, toys, vintage items, books, wrestling stuff and anything that is not nailed down.
