BYRON'S HOCKEYLAND

GRETZKY, WAYNE:

   Fake Jersey Pages

This is a Gretzky jersey that was recently auctioned. The jersey has several problems, including the fact its not the right size. There is no real game wear and the tags have been cut out of the neck. Which is typical when someone is trying to pass off a replica as being a game worn jersey. Also this jersey has a very interesting CCM & NHL Logo on it. So based on the evidence presented to me at the time I viewed this jersey, the jersey is no good. Here's the pictures.

Notice the NHL logo is on the left side and not the right and there is not a logo on the right. This style of LA Kings jersey is from 89/90 or 90/91. The kings in the second half of 89/90 wore the Large Block CCM with no logo. It wasn't until the following year did the NHL logo get added. It was on the right side. So how do we explain this that's pictured above. The team doesn't add the CCM, the company that makes the jersey  for the Kings does. I know the person that did the lettering, he doesn't remember doing this for them. In a way it makes sense this way since Gretzky tucks in the right side. But with the other problems with this jersey this combination makes me suspicious.

Here a picture of the inside hem of this Gretzky. Looks really basic here, and normal.

Nameplate and numbers seem fine.

There is two things that I do not like with in this photo. First the big thing is where did the tags go that belong in the neck. I have seen real LA Gretzky jerseys that still had the tags, so why cut these out. Well we have learned over the years that this happens a lot in fake jerseys when someone is trying to hide the fact that the jersey is the wrong size. The other thing is the placement of the captain "C" is not exactly correct. Now the placement of the "C" can be different, but when you add it to the other facts about this jersey I do not like where it is. I also think the placement is one of the thins that make this a bad jersey.

Here's the close up of the neck, notice what's missing and appears to have been cut out. With the lack of wear on the jersey this size tag would have not fallen out from abuse, which can happen when the jersey is worn a lot. It also didn't fall off in the wash, as this jersey wasn't washed enough for that too happen. Like I mentioned above, this jersey was Acquired by Mr. Golden in good faith and he took the word of the person whom he got it from. Unfortunately that person, knew Mr.Golden was not a trained professional authenticator and Mr. Golden was taken, in my opinion.
